Hello there and welcome along to my post today! Today’s topic of discussion is to give you a good idea of what Paraben free make up brands there are out there. Also, by the end of this article, I wanted to give you a better understanding as to why we don’t need to use Parabens, what they are and how they affect us.

I have previously discussed some of this in a previous post here. Today however, I will look a little more in depth into the chemicals used too.

Why are they so widely used?

Parabens are a synthetic preservative which is tasteless and have been used in the cosmetic industry for over 80 years! Parabens allow products to stay free of fungal growth, bacteria etc especially in warm, damp environments such as your bathrooms. They are also found in sauces, oils, soft drinks, oils, glues and processed meats along with hundreds of everyday products.

The ingredients on products will normally list more than one paraben used, this is to try to better protect against a wider variety or microorganisms. It is now a must for manufacturers to list ALL ingredients in their products. Parabens are usually easy to identify by their name, such as methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, or ethylparaben.

Parabens and Cancer

Parabens are used an anti-fungal agent and is also used as a food preservative. If the skin is treated with the creams that have parabens in, it can damage it with exposure to the sun’s UVB rays. This damage of the skin cells or oxidative stress, is responsible for a number of disease processes which includes cancer. These products are known to enter your body through your skin from applying these creams and lotions etc. Depending on the amount of products you do use that have parabens in, the body can absorb as much as five pounds of cosmetic chemicals each year! This statistic comes from Mercola.com and also advised that because the parabens can mimic hormones in the body, it can disrupt the functions of the endocrine system.

The preservatives are widely used in women’s cosmetics such as creams, lotions and deodorants. They are also used in pharmaceuticals, shampoos and more. These compounds have been found intact within breast cancer tissue. Some researchers have suggested that this particular paraben may increase the risk of breast cancer or even accelerate the growth of the tumors.

Parabens which does include this one, is known to mimic the effects of estrogen in our bodies. Some researchers suggest that these can cause decreased sperm count in males and reduce mobility of them too.

Don’t Fret Though!

It is definitely getting much better out there, more and more companies are getting on board and coming up with more natural preservatives. Some bigger brands are even starting to take out parabens! There are alternatives available which do not cost your purse or the earth either! The FDA are always looking into new research and studies and will continue to do so. There is no definitive answer in regard to Parabens and the damage they maybe cause although some research does suggest it. Personally, I have stopped using anything with Parabens in as it is better to be safe than sorry in my eyes.

When it comes to cosmetics etc, we should be changing them at least every 6 months, this is even with Parabens in. They are not 100% reliable as bacteria etc can grow if kept passed this time. I do know a fair amount of people who keep things like mascara for a lot more than 6 months… they have then noticed they react to them and their eyes can become infected and sore.

So, What are the Options for Paraben Free Cosmetics?

I have written some in depth articles on Paraben free items, which can be found as follows:

So, there are more here than just cosmetics listed above. I thought it would be handy to give you a wider spectrum of products that you could be using without Parabens.
