Hi everyone, thanks for taking the time to read this blog.
Today I am going to be discussing the different options for hair care which are natural and chemical free! A lot of us use conventional liquid shampoos and conditioners. The question is; Do you know how many chemicals they have in them on average? The range of toxic chemicals in one product is a shocking 12! This doesn’t even include less toxic ones. The thought of this makes me feel queasy… does it you? It really should.
Have a think about what these chemicals are really doing to your body and the environment when they are flushed away. Out of sight, out of mind? Hardly…
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate/Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS) – This product is found in most cleaning products including shampoos and conditioners. It is also used as an insecticide. This is known as a cancer-causing ingredient and is also known to cause, liver damage, skin rashes, depression, diarrhea and eye damage.
Cocamidopropyl Betaine – This is a foaming agent used in a lot of personal care products. A lot of people have reactions to this such as, eye irritation, itching, blistering and burning sensations. It may also cause serious eye and skin damage and chronic allergies to your skin.
Parabens – are a class of widely used preservatives in cosmetics and health products. It is an agent added to prolong shelf life by preventing the growth of mold and bacteria. Unfortunately it isn’t a case of just looking for ‘Parabens’ on the label. The names to look out for are butylparaben, methylparaben and propylparaben or the most commonly found parabens. Parabens are believed to disrupt hormone function by mimicking oestrogen. Too much oestrogen can trigger an increase in breast cell division and growth of tumors, which is why paraben use has been linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues. They have also been found in marine mammals.
These are just to name a few, which is why switching to a chemical free and environmentally friendly alternative is something we should all consider and is only a small change to our lifestyle. Below I have a few tried and tested options for SLS and Paraben free shampoo’s and conditioners as well as ones highly rated I haven’t tried yet. Firstly, check our my review on soap nut shampoo bars, as this will give you a review and also links to purchase many sorts of shampoo bars which are all chemical free.
There are also liquid shampoos if you prefer them to bars. I will admit though, I prefer using the bars as they have no packaging that will harm the environment. No plastic bottle and in turn, reducing our waste. Win, win!
So first on the list is Faith in Nature products. These are made in the UK and I have gotten on so well with them. I have given a couple of options on fragrance, also a triple pack which includes the shower gels too! I have done a review on the shower gels here.
Next we have Funky Soap! This is something I have just ordered for myself and I am really looking forward too. It seems to be half the price of branded ones with similar ingredients. It should arrive within the next few days, so I will add to this blog once I have tried it. I have ordered the lavender and rosemary one as this fragrance helps me fall asleep quicker.
I truly hope you enjoying trying out these products, as well as being much better for you they are helping the environment too!
